Hello Parents!

Thanks to everyone who made it to our second Zoom meeting today. I think the children really liked seeing each other as did I. If you were unable to make it, no worries, I know these are challenging times. I have included some information below in case you were unable to attend.

Priorities

The first two weeks of our new normal is a transition period. Please do not stress about completing any of the suggested work I have assigned.  Please just focus on your health and well being and that of those closest to you. By the end of next week I should have more direction about how the at home learning will look. I will provide you with this information as soon as I know more. For now, I have some suggested activities and meetings for next week, but not required.

Zoom Meetings

I will send a new link each evening prior to the 10 am meeting.

Monday - 10:00 am - Show and tell via Zoom. Choose an object, tell us 3 things about it, others will have a turn to ask you a question about it.

Wednesday - 10:00 am - Kahoot game (Details on this to follow)

Friday 10:00 - Recount via Zoom. Throughout the week, write a recount (like many of you did this week) to share. We will share and ask questions.

Open Door Hours

I will be on Zoom each day from 1-1:30. Please feel free to pop in to chat, share something new, read something to me and the other students...

I will send a link each day at 12:45 for the 1:00 Open Door Hours.

Student Portal

Our school board has a Student Portal where students can access many online learning activities. They can login through the board website. I think they need their email and password to do this. Their emails are their first name.last name@ocsbstudent.ca (e.g. eric.lopez@ocsbstudent.ca). They all have the same password for now (Grade1). I would suggest you try to access this at some point over the next week. In the weeks to come they may need to go to the student portal for a variety of activities.

Schedule

I would also suggest setting up a schedule that works for your family. I have done this myself with my own children. It really helps if they know what to expect. All of your situations are different so it's difficult for me to suggest something for your family. You will all have to do what feels right and works for your own unique situation. I would however suggest that the more "work" related activities done in the earlier part of the day and the more play based activities later. I also encourage a lot of outside time and physical activity if it is safe and possible.

Kahoot

I am going to try to put together a "Kahoot". It's an online game that can be played by all the students at the same time. The theme will be 2D shapes and 3D solids. This was the Math Unit we were starting as we were leaving to March break. I will ask about 10 questions on this unit and the students will race to answer the multiple choice options, we all login and start at the same time (it'll be Wednesday at 10 instead of the Zoom meeting). So before Wednesday, if you have time, please review the shapes/solids below. You will get an invitation to join the Kahoot. It's pretty straight forward. I have only done a few of these in the past so we'll see how it goes, fingers crossed.

Name and describe the shapes below

2D square, rectangle, circle, triangle (how many lines, are the lines straight or curved, difference between a square and a rectangle).

3D cube, cylinder, sphere, rectangular prism, cone ( what in the world resembles the solids - a cube is like a dice, a sphere is like a ball, a rectangular prism is like a kleenex box, a cone like a party hat, what 2D shapes do you see in a 3D solids? I see 6 square faces in the cube).

Extras

I will look for the correlation chart to share with you so you can gauge the level your child is reading at on Razkids and how that compares to our PM Benchmark levelled readers that we are more familiar with.

After next week we will continue with Word Wall Words. We only have about 15-20 left. It's just a bit of a challenge as my list is at the school and I don't have access to it. I will see what I can do about that.

I think that's all for now. thanks again for all your support, take it easy on yourselves and please never hesitate to reach out.

Love to you all!
Mrs. Akl
