Hi Parents,

Please read below for some updates.

Field Trip

Thank you so much to everyone who was able to make it out to volunteer for our trip to Proulx Farm. We had 13 volunteers for 15 students, that is an amazing ratio. I know it isn't always easy getting time off work but your being there is so important. We could not do these trips if it weren't for you. On that note, we have another trip to the Science museum being planned for May 16. More details on that will be available later this month. Also, thanks in advance to parents who are coming in for our Science workshop tomorrow. If it happens to be a snow day, the workshop will be postponed.

Reading

Please continue to read nightly with your child. It has been proven time and again that children who read nightly do better in many areas of the curriculum. It's also such a nice way to spend some down time with your children amidst the day to day business in life. Also, please review all the sight words presented since September.

Math

Please continue to check the Curriculum Tab in this blog and support your children at home as much as you can. I would like to ask that you review addition and subtraction to 20. I noticed that the subtraction in particular is challenging for some. You can use manipulatives in the beginning but we are working towards the students having some mental math strategies  (e.g. ways to make 10 and double facts) to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Example 1: I know that 5 and 7 is 12 because I know that 5 and 5 is 10 and 7 is 2 more so the answer will be 12.

Example 2. I know that 7 and 8 is 15 because I know my double facts that 7 and 7 is 14 and 8 is one extra so the answer will be one extra which 15.

Arts

Until the end of the year, our Arts focus will be Drama and Dance. Our Dance lessons will be with the 2 other Grade one classes. So far, the students have really enjoyed this. Please keep in mind that we still will be doing visual Art as well and Music, it's just the main lessons focus has changed.

Communication

Please continue to keep in touch and let me know if you have questions about anything. It is a pleasure working with you all!
